Nanavut Gold Needs Mining Tags
Nunavut also happens to be one of the least populated and the northernmost permanently inhabited place in the world! The polar climate probably has something to do with that since average temperatures are about 55°F (13°C) in mid-summer and drop to -17°F (-27°C) in the dead of winter. The biggest contributor to the Nunavut economy is mining, as well as gas and oil exploration; these are supplemented by tourism, artisan crafts, education, hunting, fishing and whaling.
In days gone by, the mines in Nunavet were incredibly diverse. They encompassed a wide range of exploration, production and remediation. Precious metals such as gold and silver were mined along with metals used for industrial purposes such as iron, zinc and tungsten. Even diamonds were mined in Nunavet!
Mining is still big business for Nunavet. In 2019, mining, quarrying, oil & gas extraction accounted for an estimated 18.16% of the territory’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). And given that there is only one mine in production—the Agnico-Eagle Ltd’s gold mine at Meadowbank—the implications for further growth are clear. That mine is expected to produce 370,000 ounces of gold in 2021 alone!
