Infographic titled "Thermal Transfer Label and Ribbon Combinations". Thermal transfer ribbons come in three main types: Wax ribbon, perfect for: Paper matte labels and paper semi-gloss labels. These labels can remain un smudged for years but can't stay wet or be resistant against chemicals or oils. The second type of ribbon is Wax/Resin, perfect for: Very smooth paper labels, coated semi or high gloss paper, and matte film labels. These labels produce a finer image, are more durable than wax ribbons but are only resistant to incidental water or moisture exposure. The third type of ribbon are made of pure resin, perfect for: Film labels, for example ones made of polypropylene and vinyl. These labels survive outside in full sunlight, can withstand water immersion, are scratch-resistant, can withstand chemicals and heat (depending on ribbon and label formula). However, these labels are for more harsher conditions.
