Cruze the CryoLabel® Godfather of “The Cryo’s”

‘Eeey! I’m Cruze a.k.a. The Godfather of The Cryo’s (properly known as CryoLabel® materials) from Electronic Imaging Materials, Inc. Some of you may have heard of my nephew Sensy (the Sens-A-Mark®) CryoLabel® before… he’s a pretty important guy! Reliable, hard-working, resilient… he gets that from me, Uncle Cruze. But I digress… Sensy, he had a feature written up about him some time ago, and word on the street is that more and more people want to know what else is going on with “The Cryo’s” (that’s our Mob name… try to keep up, huh?) over at EIM. Well, luckily for you, I’m feelin’ rather giving today, so I thought I’d take a moment to sit down with you and introduce myself.  It’s not every day you get The Godfather of Cryo’s so willingly!

CRUZEWhere should we begin? A little background maybe… It all started when I was first born. If you do some research, you’ll find that the name Cruze means “brisk” – so I guess you could say I was born to become The Godfather of The Cryo’s. My upbringing wasn’t horrendous as you might come to expect from a big tough guy like myself. In reality, it was pretty laid-back. When it was time for me to start working… well, that’s when things got a little crazy!

You may want to go pop yourself some popcorn – this is about to get good! Go ahead, I’ll wait…

… Oh! And don’t forget the butter and parmesan!

Ok, you ready? Here we go. As you know, most Mobsters are associated with crime… and I can’t deny that’s not true of The Cryo’s either… but we aren’t the bad guys here! I got my adhesive in the door by first working in the labs as a scientist. When our samples weren’t lasting long enough and were ruining our evidence, I decided to take matters into my own hands.

Now, being from the cold Northeast I grew up loving the winters. I lived for them. I spent as much time as I could outside in the cold snow and ice and I was happy as ever! This made me think… I’ll start freezing our samples so they’ll last longer!

Well, that idea was terrific, but it was missing one key piece. How in the world were we going to know which sample was which when we couldn’t properly identify our test tubes and vials and what not?! Well, I started racking my brain and I decided the only way I was going to understand what the tube labels were going through, was to go through it myself… and see what the root of the problem really was!

I submitted myself to the process and before I knew it, I was sent through the printer and marked with the number “1” and then I was peeled from my backing and adhered to my very own DNA Sequencing Test Tube!  Like I said, I’m kind of a big deal.  Ok, so… I got comfy and settled onto my test tube.

What comes next isn’t pretty… I was then filled with some goodies and went for a swim with the fishies, in a well-known swim hole around here… The Nitro! Now, for those of you unfamiliar with The Nitro, it’s a swim hole of pure liquid Nitrogen… only the bravest of brave go in there. It’s SO cold it takes your breath away!  Like I said though… I love the cold. The colder—the better. As I yelled “Bring It Nitroooo”, I was tossed into the freezer for a 3-day stint.

When it was time to re-emerge, I noticed a few things had changed… my buddies from downtown who had taken the plunge with me weren’t so lucky. They came out of The Nitro looking like… well, let me just say this… it wasn’t pretty boys and girls.  Everyone was stunned, including myself, when I looked in the mirror and noticed that I, myself, (almost) looked better than when I went in! I was still readable, adhered and wasn’t slipping at all once I started warming back up to room temperature.

This, my friends, was where it really all began for The Cryo’s. As I gained popularity, I started finding others just like me and together we formed The Cryo’s, which there are presently four chapters of! Sensy heads the Sens-A-Mark® Chapter, Cappy heads the Cap-and-Wrap® Chapter and Blaine heads the Blank CryoLabel® Chapter. You’ll meet those guys some other time, I’m sure.

Anyways, as The Cryo’s grew, we broke off into different industries and now work very closely with scientists and researchers in all types of laboratories such as Virology, DNA Sequencing, Drug Discovery and Forensics, just to name a few.  We are specially trained to handle tough cryogenic temperatures and adhere to a variety of test tubes, vials and plates knowing that freezers and liquid nitrogen present many challenging issues for us Labels.  None of that scares us though; we greet these challenges with open arms and welcome new challenges all the time!

Just recently, we decided to get some Ink done.  A few of my buddies spent some time in the Printers and came out pretty remarkably, if I don’t say so myself.  Now we are even easier to identify, with the option of adding color-coding!  The guys who got inked up were sent off to a company working with human genome research.  Pretty serious stuff.  The company provides custom research services and experimental tools to aid researchers in large-scale studies.  Ya, we’re all real proud of those guys… they’re really doing some incredible work out there!

Another group of guys from Blaine’s Chapter (Blank CryoLabel®) were sent out to a corporation focused on Virology… researching bacteria and viruses. These guys don’t get grossed out too easily; they were just excited for a new and different job! They went out to the lab and got inked up with some colored logos and prepped the lab for the rest of the crew who would be arriving shortly thereafter.

The second crew was coming a bit differently. Before they shipped out, they took a run through the press to transform themselves into beautifully customized, taper-shaped labels. They did this so they could wrap snuggly around this lab’s Eppendorf® tubes.

Like I said, my guys are dedicated! Once they were all together, they met the corporation’s many other partners in the field―bringing together some of the World’s leading scientists in the fight against infectious disease. They provide an extensive range of research products and continue to expand their services.

The jobs we take as The Cryo’s aren’t easy… and they’re certainly not for everyone. We are the best of the best in our industry and we are constantly striving to prove that. If you think you have a challenging issue for us, we’d love to hear it!  As of now, we’ve been challenged with:

  • Plastic and glass vials with special silicone coatings to minimize the effects of spilled liquids
  • Tight diameter vials that are problematic for labels needing to stick well around the curve
  • Small vials that require small labels and yet the contents of the vial need to remain visible
  • Repeated freeze and thaw cycles require labels that resist moisture
  • Small side walls on microwell, micro assay and Microtiter® plates that require narrow labels

We have persevered and overcome those challenges with great victory, but we aren’t going to stop there! We are durable, resilient and hard-working and on top of that, we are customizable and will personalize ourselves just for you and your needs!  We love what we do and we’re proud of how we do it!  After all, we’re The Cryo’s! Capisci? You Understand? Excellent!
